Things to do:

Sail the Whitsundays:
The main attraction around Airlie Beach are the Whitsunday Islands. There are a large selection of boats which tour the islands, way too many to mention. They range from moderate boats which cater for eight to twelve people, to boats which accommodate for up to thirty people. If you really want to splash out and sail on the creme de la creme, the Soloway Lass (1800 675 790) is the boat for you.

If you want to see the Whitsunday Islands (particularly Whitehaven Beach) but you don't want to do the full 3 day/2 night trip, one of the better 1-day tour operators is Ocean Rafting (07 4946 1774). For around $70 you are brought to some beautiful lookouts and great snorkelling sites. Lunch and snacks are included.

Dive:
There is some great diving and snorkelling to do in the reef around the Whitsundays. If you want to do a full dive course and sail the Whitsundays in one, Pro Dive (1800 075 035) offer a 5-day open water course with 3 days and 3 nights on their boat for $499.

Skydive:
In my opinion this is the best place to do a skydive in Australia. As well as the adrenalin rush you get from the jump itself, the view from the plane on the way up is really amazing. Tandem Skydive Airlie Beach (07 4946 9115) are the main skydiving operators. A 10,000ft jump with video here costs around $399. The video you get here really is top quality.

Conway National Park:
This 22500ha reserve has some beautiful walks and wildlife. Mt. Rooper stands high in the middle of the park and a lookout from the top gives a birds eye view of the Whitsunday passage. It is a very tough walk so make sure you bring loads of water. The whole circuit for this track is about 5.4km. Another highlight of the park is Swamp Bay. The beach here is covered by broken coral and the view is of the Molle Passage and the Molle Group of islands.

Visit the Wildlife Park:
Situated 7km outside Airlie Beach, a wide range of native Australian animals live in the Barefoot Bushman's Wildlife Park (07 4946 1480) which is popular with visitors. This park is open daily from 9-4.30 and gives VIP and YHA discount.

Go Quad-Biking :
In every town that is regarded with a certain activity, its always nice to do something different that you weren't planning on. In Airlie Beach, this is definitely the activity to do to break away from the norm. Scramble around mountain-side dirt-tracks with amazing rainforest scenery. Contact Wendy on Whitsunday Quad Bike Bush Adventures (07 4946 1998). Different tours are in operation costing between $55-$110 and usually take half a day.
