Things
to do:
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park:
Along with
Sydney Opera House, Uluru is Australia's most instantly recogniseable
landmark. Some say this monolith is just a big rock in the desert but
it is far more than that. For a start it is the biggest monolith in
the world. Secondly there is an amazing feeling when you first see it.
Even though you will have seen it in photos, you can't understand it's
size until you actually visit 'the Rock' in person.
If
weather permits, you can climb the rock. Local Aborigines would prefer
if you wouldn't, but still thousands do it every day. If you do decide
to climb it, make sure and bring lots of water and make sure you have
a head for heights. The pinnacle of the rock is 348m from the ground.
Also in
the National Park is Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). Not as well-known as it's
accompanying rock, the tallest rock of the Olgas, Mt. Olga, actually
stands nearly 200m higher than Uluru. There is a fascinating walk through
the different rocks called 'The Valley of the Winds' which is a 'must-do'.
Once you've
done the walks, the Cultural Centre in the National Park is very informative.
Anything you want to know about Uluru, you will find here. The Cultural
Centre is open daily from 7am to 5.30pm
Watarrka
(Kings Canyon) National Park:
Kings Canyon is a natural gorge which has a spectacular walk which
starts, or ends, on 'cardiac hill'. Don't let this put you off. It's
not that hard! The walk takes about 4 hours, with stop offs at the top
to take in the magnificent views over the gorge. You might recognise
some of the scenery here - some parts of 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'
were filmed here. This is in the part of the canyon known as the
'Amphitheatre'. Another stop off is the 'Garden of Eden'.
During summer months you can swim here. Bring a good supply of water
with you on this walk.
