This small town is situated in the middle of the desert and during the summer it gets hot. So hot that most of the locals live underground to get away from the heat. Even the church is underground! In summer months temperatures can rise to 50°C. In more recent years, Coober Pedy has become famous due to Hollywood. 'Mad Max III - Beyond The Thunderdome' was filmed here and, apparently, some scenes of the the new Star Wars film have also been filmed here. It's also the best place in Australia to get opals. If you want to get away from it all and basically hide for a while this is the place to go. Australians always say that if somebody wants to dissappear for a while, Coober Pedy is usually where you will find them. Facts: |
