Situated adjacent to Hervey Bay is Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island. You can trek through dense rainforest, swim in the clearest freshwater lakes you will ever find, walk over massive sand blows and relax on beautiful beaches over one day, or three, depending on what type of tour you do.

There are various tour operators and types of tours which visit Fraser - day trips, 3 day/2 night self-drive trips or 3 day/2 night guided tours. The best of these is definitely the 3 day/2night self-drive tour as you can do what you want and when you want.

After the ferry ride from Hervey Bay, the only effective mode of transport is a four wheel drive vehicle. You can book your self-drive tour through most of Hervey Bay's hostels. By booking your trip through your hostel, you could end up going to Fraser with people who you don't like. 4WD Hire Island Explorers (07 4124 3770) rent out jeeps independently.

Once you are on the island, most of the driving is done on Seventy-Five Mile Beach on the east coast of the island. This is classified as a main road in Australia, just like any of the highways! From here are all the different exits lead to the island's many attractions. And just remember - this is a sand island so expect to have sand everywhere, and I mean absolutely everywhere.
