Getting
Around:
The cheapest way to travel the east coast, if you don't want to miss
anything, is by bus. The two main bus companies on the coast are Greyhound
(132 030) and Oz Experience (02 9368 1766). Another
bus service is McCafferty's (131 499) which have been
bought by Greyhound. According to most backpackers, McCafferty's offer
the best service as they are always on time. Reports show that Greyound
buses can be frequently late and their videos won't be working. With
the Oz Experience, where you pay for tours and transport in the one
package, it is mandatory to visit some places you mightn't want to.
Another
bus company which travels the coast is Aussie Magic Bus (1800
449 444). Magic Bus is a bit pricier than McCafferty's and Greyhound.
At the
moment there is a price war with the airlines so Qantas, Ansett,
Impulse and Virgin Blue all offer very cheap internal
flights. Some can be even cheaper if you book them on the Internet.
A rail network also runs on the coast but isn't very convenient for
the traveller wanting to see a lot of the country.
Sydney's
public transport system, particuarly the rail network, is very easy
to use. Buses aren't as efficient which is only to be expected. A red
weekly covering all transport networks (rail, bus, ferry) is
really good value at $35.
