Australia's second largest city is the one where backpackers from Europe will feel most at home. It is definitely Australia's most European city. There is a more cosmopolitan feel here than Sydney, particularly around places like Chapel Street. Melbourne is also Australia's sporting home. The Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open (tennis) and the Aussie Rules football final all take place in this beautiful city. That along with what is arguably Australia's biggest sporting event of the year - The Melbourne Cup. And although Melbourne also has the most European climate don't worry if you are looking for sun. It really, really bakes in the summer.
