You can bring your own mobile phone into Australia (if its not a pay-as-you-go and isn't chipped) and buy a pre-paid phonepack for as little as $50. This gives you a number with a good few dollars credit which will be live 365 days after you last top up your credit. Some of the mobile networks are Telstra Mobile Net, Optus, Vodafone, Dingo Blue, Orange and Virgin Mobile. Most of these mobiles give you the facility to send text messages home for when you are too lazy to write some e-mails.
